Panelist 1: Hydrogen in British Columbia

Presented by: David Coburn, BC Hydrogen Office - Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Low Carbon Innovation

Introduction to the BC Hydrogen Office, overview of the current state of Hydrogen in BC, an update on the BC Hydrogen Strategy and implementation work.

Panelist 2: Highlights: Recent and upcoming public research to guide hydrogen investment in BC

Presented by: Richard Truman & Randy Hughes, Geoscience BC

An overview of current and future Geoscience BC research projects producing public data and reports to inform decisions relating to hydrogen development. By committing to support Geoscience BC research, industry partners demonstrate demand for public geoscience, and industry contributions can be used to encourage further funding from others.

Geoscience BC will also provide details on how it is working with communities and Indigenous groups to ensure opportunities for involvement early in the research and project development phase.

Upcoming Project Concepts to develop new geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage potential research in BC:

Panelist 3: Central BC Hydrogen Hub

Presented by: Deklan Corstanje, City of Prince George

As part of the implementation of the BC Hydrogen Strategy, the Province is executing the completion of a Central BC Hydrogen Hub through the City of Prince George. Prince George is an ideal location to kickstart the development of a central B.C. hydrogen hub, with several sources of industrial activity already present in the region. As the main service centre for central BC, and a significant transportation crossroads, it is well situated to distribute that fuel across 70% of the provincial landmass. An international airport, CN Intermodal terminal, and direct rail connection to the Ports of Prince Rupert all offer ready export access. The City will work with partners throughout the region to streamline project permitting, increase the adoption and knowledge of hydrogen among industry, including commercial producers and users, as well as the general public, and increase investment and economic development in the region. Completing this project will be of importance for achieving policy actions outlined both in the City’s Official Community Plan, Strategic Plan, and Economic Development Strategy, and in the BC Hydrogen Strategy, and ultimately advancing the hydrogen sector in BC.

About Geoscience BC

Geoscience BC's independent, public geoscience is a first link in the supply chain for Canada's net-zero emissions economy.

Our critical minerals and metals, cleaner energy and geological carbon capture and storage research is funded by industry, government, and others. It informs evidence-based decisions by industry, governments, Indigenous groups and communities.

Geoscience BC is guided by a volunteer Board of Directors, technical and Indigenous volunteers and by Geoscience BC members. We are a not-for-profit society incorporated under the BC Societies Act.
