Geoscience BC’s independent, public geoscience is a first link in the supply chain for Canada’s net-zero emissions economy.
Our critical minerals and metals, cleaner energy and geological carbon capture and storage research is funded by industry, government and others. It informs evidence-based decisions by industry, governments, Indigenous groups and communities.
Geoscience BC is guided by a volunteer Board of Directors, technical and Indigenous volunteers and by Geoscience BC members. We are a not-for-profit society incorporated under the BC Societies Act.
We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of our partners, including the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation.
About Us
Our Vision
To be a leading partner and provider of credible and relevant earth science research and data in British Columbia.
Our Mission
To generate and publicly share high quality and unbiased earth science research and data that:
- Improves our collective level of geoscience knowledge;
- Informs responsible natural resource development and investment decisions;
- Catalyzes socio-economic opportunities; and
- Stimulates innovation and geoscience technologies.
Strategic Plan
Geoscience BC’s Strategic Plan 2018-2022 guides the organization to achieve our vision and accomplish our mission. To build the Plan, we listened to more than 400 people from a wide range of partners and interest groups. We heard that publicly-accessible geoscience has never been more important.
In June 2019 we added an addendum to the Plan to add new water research goals following input from a Strategic Task Force on Water.

Board of Directors
Geoscience BC’s volunteer Board of Directors consists of up to 13 members with a variety of backgrounds and interests. The Board is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organization, including research project budgets based on recommendations from its Technical Advisory Committees.
Technical Advisory Committees
Geoscience BC’s Technical Advisory Committees (TACs) are made up of Board-appointed expert volunteers with specific expertise to identify, plan, develop and review earth science projects. TAC members are responsible for providing project recommendations to the Board for final review and decision.
Other Committees
Geoscience BC’s Nominating Committee, Finance Committee and Compensation Committee are standing committees of the Board of Directors.
Staff
Geoscience BC staff are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the organization and implementing the Annual Management Plan.
