The BC Government supports Geoscience BC with $5 million investment

June 4, 2015 - Geoscience BC today thanks the provincial government for its commitment of $5 million to support mineral, water and energy earth science in British Columbia. The Province of BC announced this new funding earlier today.

"I want to thank all of my colleagues in government for supporting this investment in Geoscience BC, but especially the Minister of Finance," said the Honourable Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines and Minister Responsible for Core Review. "All of us in government work hard to balance the provincial budget on behalf of all British Columbians and it is only those initiatives that are of outstanding provincial importance that warrant a "yes". Congratulations to Geoscience BC for its outstanding contribution to the economic health of BC."

Honourable Rich Coleman, Deputy Premier, Minister of Natural Gas Development and Responsible for Housing stated "the important work that Geoscience BC conducts in the Province helps us with improved sustainable resource development. Their ongoing work in uncovering new resources also leads to increased revenue investment in British Columbia."

Dallas Smith, President and CEO of the Nanwakolas Council and Geoscience BC director said, "A source of credible earth science information is in everyone's best interest; First Nations when considering land access, use and resource development. This is where Geoscience BC plays a vital role. I am pleased that the Provincial Government is continuing to support the benefits Geoscience brings to First Nations and communities".

"We greatly appreciate this vote of confidence from the Province of BC, demonstrating its ongoing support of Geoscience BC and our continued delivery of sustainable, investment-driven programs," said Robin Archdekin, President and CEO of Geoscience BC. "This support for projects with First Nations and communities across the Province will continue to generate jobs and investment through the delivery of high quality earth science information."

Established by the Province in 2005, Geoscience BC is an independent, non-profit organization mandated to support mineral and oil & gas investment in British Columbia and support responsible resource development through generating, interpreting and publicly distributing geoscience data in collaboration with First Nations, communities, governments and the resource sector.
