Geoscience BC Receives a $3 Million Commitment for Public Geoscience in BC
May 22, 2014 - Geoscience BC today thanks the provincial government for its commitment of $3 million in new funding to support mineral and energy geoscience in British Columbia, which was announced earlier this morning.
"We're very pleased to make this contribution to Geoscience BC and continue our support of the great work the organization has been doing over the past nine years to stimulate mineral and oil and gas investment in our province," said Honourable Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines. "We are committed to continue working with Geoscience BC to reach the goal of establishing long-term and predictable funding."
"In this time of financial restraint, the government has shown an ongoing support of Geoscience BC and the continued delivery of programs focused on attracting investment in British Columbia," said Robin Archdekin, President and CEO of Geoscience BC. "The funding will be put toward new projects that contribute to the public geoscience framework to promote BC's minerals and oil & gas exploration and development sectors."
Past Geoscience BC initiatives across the interior and on Northern Vancouver Island have led to increased mineral staking. The new TREK project started in 2013 and is adding new information to BC's underexplored Interior Plateau region. In Northeast BC, Geoscience BC water monitoring and sourcing projects have helped enable the significant natural gas opportunity and have led to more than $100 million in industry investment in infrastructure to facilitate sustainable water use.
Established by the Province in 2005, Geoscience BC is a non-profit organization mandated to attract mineral and oil & gas investment to British Columbia through generating, interpreting and publicly distributing geoscience data in partnership with First Nations, communities, governments and industry.
