Geoscience BC Launches New Earth Science Viewer

February 16, 2015 - Geoscience BC is pleased to announce the launch of the beta version of its new Earth Science Viewer. The Earth Science Viewer will allow everyone to view Geoscience BC data from their personal computer or mobile device without the need for extra software. The viewer is a web-based mapper that consolidates Geoscience BC minerals geoscience data acquired over the organization's first 10 years. Development of the application is ongoing; new datasets will be added to the mapper as they come available and Geoscience BC's oil and gas datasets will be added to the viewer in the near future.

Using HTML 5 as a platform, the application provides users with simple mapping functionality and allows basic geoprocessing tasks through a web browser without the need for specialized GIS software. The HTML 5 platform lets users view the information on all web-capable devices including workstations, tablets and smartphones. In addition to Geoscience BC datasets, the Earth Science Viewer incorporates satellite imagery, topography, geology, and other public geoscience and various open data initiatives including documented mineral occurrences (MINFILE) and mineral tenure.

The Earth Science Viewer considers a broad range of users from First Nations, prospectors, geologists, students and resource workers to the general public. Available through the Geoscience BC website, and with functionality comparable to GIS software, the Earth Science Viewer represents the democratization of all of the organization's earth science data.

Geoscience BC looks forward to user feedback as part of the site's ongoing improvement; tablet and smartphone users can look forward to increased functionality in the near future. The site can be accessed through www.geosciencebc.com/s/webmaps.asp.
