"Applied Economic Geochemistry – from Greenfields to Production" Friday, April 30, 2010
3:30-4:30 pm

Space will be limited so please RSVP to
by April 27th to reserve your seat.
Geochemistry is traditionally thought of in terms of targeting during exploration programs, however, geochemistry has a much broader role to play in mining and exploration, from area selection within mineralised belts through to quality assurance of assay results used for grade control and reconciliation. The economic impacts of decisions made related to geochemical and assaying issues are large and complex and can range from lost opportunity costs (I didn't 'see' the anomaly in that catchment), through to over or under payment for shipped concentrates. During the presentation, the 'economics' of applied geochemistry will be presented within a context of the cost of discovery, the cost impact of exploring through increasing depths of cover, the importance of detecting haloes, the dollar value of poor sampling precision and assay bias, and value adding by using existing geochemical data to estimate metallurgical performance parameters for mine optimisation.
Economic Geology for Geophysicists The British Columbia Geophysical Society will be hosting a one day Economic Geology for Geophysicists course on May 6th. The course, provided with generous support from Geoscience BC and UBC Mineral Deposit Research Unit, is aimed at providing economic geology background for geophysicists and all exploration geoscientists. The information presented will provide a framework to help the integration and communication of exploration techniques.

UBC Robson Square Pre-registration Required – See details below
Cost: $25
(Includes course notes, lunch and refreshemnts)
Course presenters include Thomas Bissig (MDRU), Craig Hart (MDRU), Dianne Mitchinson (MDRU), Steve Rowins (BCGS), Claire Chamberlain (Teck), Lucas Marshall (Teck), and Sean McKinley (Cambria Geosciences Inc).
Topics that will be covered include: tectonic settings, host rocks, structure, emplacement, alteration, mineralization and the relation and comparison between various deposit models. Deposit types to be discussed include porphyry deposits, Archean gold, intrusion-related gold, epithermal gold, VMS, SEDEX/MVT/sediment-hosted copper, and IOCG deposits. Physical properties will be considered!
Space is limited so please reserve a place early. Pre-registration is required and will close on April 29th. This course can also be considered towards professional development hours for registered professional geoscientists.
Please contact
to reserve a place and arrange payment. Payment is by cash or cheque (payable to the British Columbia Geophysical Society), and must be made prior to the course.

Mark April 27th in your calendar. The GAC-Cordilleran Section invites you to its second annual Cordilleran Metallogeny Workshop. This year's theme is Porphyry Settings. With a focus on British Columbia and Yukon, we will look beyond the pit limits and examine the tectonic settings and broader geological controls of Cordilleran porphyry deposits.
