Geoscience BC Annual Report Highlights Value of Independent Research in British Columbia
Vancouver, BC – July 4, 2024 – Geoscience BC’s Annual Report 2023/24 is now available, highlighting the value of increased collaboration around public and independent geoscience research in British Columbia.

In their introduction message, Chair of the Board Donna Philips and President & CEO Gavin C. Dirom state: “Geoscience BC’s significant evolution in recent years… positions us well to deliver on a significant need for independent research to enable investment, innovation, informed decisions and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.”
Covering April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024, the Annual Report describes ongoing and completed research, as well as proposed future Project Concepts:
- Minerals: updates on nine completed, new and ongoing minerals research projects, including Phase 1 of the Critical Minerals and Metals in BC Mine Tailings and Waste Rock program.
- Energy Resources: updates on five completed and ongoing research projects. These include the Northeast BC Lithium Formation Water Database, which provides an assessment of potential for lithium extraction from brines in BC’s Northeast Region, and carbon storage potential assessments such as the Central Interior BC Carbon Storage Assessment.
- Geothermal: a report on the Kootenay Lake Geothermal Project – Phase 3 project and details of a Phase 4 Project Concept.
- Water: Information about Indigenous input into the Pilot Collaborative Water Monitoring Program, Northeastern British Columbia.
Other highlights from 2023/24 include:
- Continued growth of Geoscience BC Membership & Sponsorship at the core of Geoscience BC’s collaborative model, with 198 members at March 31, 2024.
- New Project Concepts are research ideas in development for which we are seeking input and investment from Geoscience BC members, industry, government, academia, communities and Indigenous groups.
