Celebrating a decade of independent earth science for British Columbia

October 8, 2015 - Geoscience BC has been generating and delivering earth science information to stimulate investment, employment and development in the province of British Columbia since 2005.

Geoscience BC has built a solid reputation as an independent, non-profit organization working in close collaboration with First Nations, communities, governments and the resource sector.

Today they mark their 10th anniversary with a day of technical seminars followed by The Decade Dinner. The Honourable Bill Bennett, Minister for Minister of Energy and Mines and Minister Responsible for Core Review, is the keynote speaker at dinner this evening.

"The data Geoscience BC creates attracts millions of dollars of investment to British Columbia. This investment provides opportunities for jobs and supports local business and communities to diversify their economies, and leads to the responsible development of new mining and energy projects for our province," says the Hon. Bill Bennett.

Geoscience BC have completed over 132 projects and collected new information across more than 529,500 square kilometres of the province in the last 10 years, including vast airborne surveys and thousands of soil and water samples.

"The resource sector uses this data to make key exploration decisions. It helps reduce some of the risk inherent in our industry. Geoscience BC are collecting data today that could lead to the discovery of the next major mine tomorrow," says Michael Cathro, Principal of Cathro Resources Corp. and Chair of the Geoscience BC Board.

First Nations and local communities benefit from the economic diversity and employment opportunities sustainable resource development brings. Geoscience BC reaches out to people in project areas to provide workshops and provide scholarships to earth science research students.

"Geoscience BC's independence makes them a trusted partner," explains Dallas Smith, President and CEO of the Nanwakolas Council and Geoscience BC Board member.

Robin Archdekin, Geoscience BC President and CEO, says, "Credible information from a trusted, independent source is vital to attract and support mineral and energy projects in our province. We've provided this for 10 years, and will for many more."
