Geoscience BC Announces 2015 Scholarship Winners
July 16, 2015 - Geoscience BC is pleased to announce that ten individuals have been selected to receive 2015 Geoscience BC Scholarship Awards. The scholarships, valued at $5,000 each, are awarded to post-graduate students working on thesis topics relevant to supporting mineral or energy exploration and development in British Columbia. Since 2007, Geoscience BC has awarded a total of seventy-three scholarships to post-graduate students conducting BC-based earth science.
A scholarship review committee, consisting of volunteer industry and academic representatives, evaluated all applicants on their project's technical merit and its potential to attract or support investment, as well as the individual's academic qualifications, work experience and career goals.
"As an international student, there are few scholarships for which I can apply," said Sina Abadzadesahraei, PhD Candidate at the University of Northern British Columbia. "Geoscience BC's support is greatly appreciated and will enable me to continue producing high quality research in this avenue of study." Sina is studying the hydrological cycle in the Coles Lake region of Northeastern BC. The results of this work will help to better understand the influence of resource development and changing climate conditions on the availability of water resources with an aim to support a sustainable balance between economic and environmental interests.
