Geoscience BC Releases Two Nechako Basin Reports

September 26, 2011 - Geoscience BC is pleased to announce the release of the following two reports, which focus on central BC's Nechako Basin:

  • Report 2011-10 "Rock Physical Property Measurements to Aid Geophysical Surveys in the Nechako Basin Oil and Gas Region, central British Columbia" by G. Andrews, S. Quane, R.J. Enkin, K. Russell, A. Kushnir, L. Kennedy, N. Hayward and M. Heap; and
  • Report 2011-13 "Preliminary Lithological and Structural Framework of Eocene Volcanic Rocks in the Nechako Region, Central British Columbia" by E. Bordet, C. Hart and D. Mitchinson

About Report 2011-10

"Rock Physical Property Measurements to Aid Geophysical Surveys in the Nechako Basin Oil and Gas Region, central British Columbia"

Miocene and younger basalts and Eocene to Jurassic age volcanic and sedimentary rocks underlie significant portions of the Interior Plateau and Nechako Basin of central British Columbia. There is potential for unexploited hydrocarbon and base metal resources underlying these younger volcanic and sedimentary successions, making this area of significant economic interest.

Geophysical surveys (both seismic reflection and magnetotellurics), funded by Geoscience BC and the Geological Survey of Canada, have concentrated on (1) portions of the Nechako Basin for hydrocarbon potential within Jurassic and Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and (2) portions of the Interior Plateau for base metal exploration. To help interpret variations in geophysical signals, this project has measured the geophysical properties (density, porosity, magnetic susceptibility and remanence, electrical resistivity and chargeability, and seismic velocity) for 107 samples of the key lithologies of the Nechako Basin.

About Report 2011-13

"Preliminary Lithological and Structural Framework of Eocene Volcanic Rocks in the Nechako Region, Central British Columbia"

This report presents the preliminary interpretations of an ongoing PhD thesis project by Esther Bordet. The report documents new mapping and proposes an improved stratigraphic and structural model for the Eocene period in the Nechako Basin. Characterization of the nature, thickness and structural framework of Eocene volcanic rocks in the Nechako region provides new insights into the area's Early Cenozoic history and will provide a more robust framework for future mineral and oil & gas exploration in the Nechako region.
