Geoscience BC at AME Roundup 2024

Geoscience BC will be at the AME Roundup 2024 conference from January 22 to 25, 2024 at Booth #1310 to share information about newly completed research, a new critical minerals and metals research project and our popular membership and sponsorship program.

The transition to net-zero emissions and supply security issues are increasing interest in British Columbia’s natural resources, and with it the need for high-quality, independent public geoscience to inform evidence-based decisions, including those relating to critical minerals and metals, emissions reduction and cleaner energy generation.

During Roundup
  • Meet some of the Geoscience BC team (Gavin C. Dirom, Christa Pellett, Richard Truman, Brady Clift and Virginie Pochard-Linage) at Booth #1310.
  • Poster Session (Ballroom C): several posters will feature Geoscience BC scholarship recipients.
    • Characterizing Hostrocks and Alteration Footprints at the Lorraine Alkalic Cu-Au Porphyry Deposit, British Columbia, Canada
      • H. Xu, S. Barker, F. Bouzari, C. Harranden and M. Manor
    • LA-ICP-MS trace element mapping of sulphides from the Burgundy Ridge Cu-Au Alkalic Porphyry Prospect in the Golden Triangle, Northwestern British Columbia (NTS 104B/14E)
      • J. Dlugosz, K.P. Larson, C.J.M. Lawley, C.J. Beno and D.C. Petts
    • Controls on the Ni mineralization of the Alaskan-type Turnagain Deposit, British Columbia
      • K.R. Broda, A.E. Williams-Jones and O.V. Vasyukova
    • Stratigraphic Classification and Geochronology Within the Hazelton Group, Stewart Mining Camp, Northwest British Columbia
      • K.M. Powers, K.E.L. Rubingh and S.L.L. Barker

Monday, January 22
  • Summary of Activities 2023: Geoscience BC will release its Summary of Activities 2023 volume on Monday, January 22. It includes eleven papers summarizing 2023 research projects and current Geoscience BC scholarship recipients. Limited hard copies of the Summary of Activities will be available at Geoscience BC’s AME Roundup booth and digital copies will be available to download from the Geoscience BC website. Thank you to Teck Resources Limited for sponsoring the 2023 Geoscience BC Scholarship Program.

  • Characterization and Extraction of Rare Earth Elements from East Kootenay Coalfields – REE BC Coal Project Completion: Rare earth elements (REEs) are an important component in electronics, wind turbines and other advanced technologies, but traditional sources of REEs are becoming more difficult to discover and develop leading to efforts to find novel sources of REEs. Coalfields have been identified as a potential source of REEs across the world. This study quantified REEs content and studied extraction techniques for BC coalfields for the first time with all results from this unique study in BC to be released during the AME Roundup conference.

  • Critical Minerals & Metals in British Columbia Mine Tailings & Waste Rock – Phase 1: We will announce details of the first phase of this new program, which will collate and analyze existing data to distinguish opportunities for critical mineral identification at current and legacy mine sites. Phase 1 will identify sites for further technical evaluation of new technologies and methods for extraction of critical minerals and metals identified.
    • Meet Geoscience BC’s Vice-President, Minerals Christa Pellett and Manager, Minerals, Brady Clift to talk about Critical Minerals & Metals in British Columbia Mine Tailings & Waste Rock – Phase 1.
    • They will be at the Geoscience BC booth #1310 to answer questions about the project from 3:30 to 4:30 PM.
