CHFCA and Geoscience BC Announce Collaboration to Support Provincial Hydrogen Industry

Vancouver, BC – March 8, 2022 – The Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (CHFCA) and Geoscience BC are pleased to announce the signing of a collaboration agreement to support the development of the hydrogen sector in British Columbia.

The agreement defines various areas for collaboration between the CHFCA and Geoscience BC. Such areas include stimulating regional economic opportunities, identifying and assessing geological carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) targets in B.C., and advancing geoscience and innovative earth science technologies to address technical gaps and facilitate low-carbon intensity hydrogen production. The two organizations will also closely work together to identify potential earth science research projects that are of interest to the hydrogen sector.

“The BC Hydrogen Strategy projects growing demand for clean hydrogen to decarbonize industrial processing, heating and transportation,” says Mark Kirby, President and CEO of the CHFCA. “BC is well positioned to produce cost-effective, clean hydrogen from its abundant renewable power, biomass and natural gas reserves, but good geoscience data is needed to support low, zero or even negative carbon intensity hydrogen production. We look forward to collaborating with Geoscience BC on these important initiatives.”

The CHFCA represents the vast majority of the industry and academic stakeholders in Canada’s hydrogen and fuel cell sector and works to raise awareness of the benefits of hydrogen and fuel cells and accelerate the adoption of its members’ products and services in Canada and abroad.

Geoscience BC President and CEO Gavin C. Dirom added: “The need for quality public geoscience to inform evidence-based decisions, including those relating to cleaner energy, geothermal and hydrogen production, is increasing as we transition to a lower carbon economy. This collaboration agreement will help to guide future research and maximize value to this growing sector.”

Geoscience BC is an independent, not-for-profit society that generates, promotes and supports applied geoscience research relating to minerals, energy and water resources. This plays an important role in working towards net-zero, attracting investment and supporting Indigenous reconciliation in B.C.

About the Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (CHFCA)
The Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (CHFCA) is a national, non-profit sector association that supports Canadian industry and research in the development, demonstration and deployment of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in Canada and overseas. Established in 2009, the CHFCA is seeing rapid growth, with over 160 members and branches established across the country, including provincial branches/affiliates in British Columbia (Hydrogen BC), Alberta (Hydrogen Alberta) and Quebec (Hydrogène Québec), and Ontario (Hydrogen Business Council of Canada). The CHFCA’s members specialize in fuel cell stack development, hydrogen production, hydrogen fueling infrastructure, energy storage, vehicle manufacturing, components and materials, research, engineering and consulting. You can follow the CHFCA on LinkedIn, Twitter at @PoweringNow or visit www.chfca.ca for more information.
