Summary of Activities 2020 Released
Geoscience BC will release the Minerals and Energy & Water Summary of Activities 2020 volumes at 10:00 am on Monday, January 18. They include papers summarizing the majority of Geoscience BC’s completed, ongoing and new research projects in 2020, including:
- 15 Minerals research papers
- 11 Energy: Oil & Gas research papers
- One Energy: Geothermal research paper
- Four Water research papers
The digital Summary of Activities will be available at Geoscience BC’s Remote Roundup booth and directly from the Geoscience BC website.
New Minerals Research Reports and Project Completions
Georeferencing and Data Capture of National Instrument 43-101 Reports in British Columbia
- This project examined publicly available information about British Columbian minerals projects submitted to the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) between August 2004 and October 2019 in National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101) technical reports to identify and provide spatial information. Led by Nicole Barlow, the team at Purple Rock Inc. took valuable information about mineral occurrences in BC contained in 43-101 mineral exploration reports and used to them update MINFILE occurrences.
Geochemical and Indicator Mineral Data from a Regional Bulk Stream-Sediment Survey, Boundary District, South-Central British Columbia
- This new report will describe a modified bulk stream-sediment sampling and analysis strategy that improves BC’s open-source regional geochemical data coverage and adds valuable mineralogical information. The report contains new data for bulk sediment, pebble and conventional silt samples collected by Wayne Jackaman, Noble Exploration Services Ltd., in 2019 from 98 sites near Greenwood in southern BC (Penticton Map Sheet NTS 082E).
Smithers Exploration Group Restoration of the Collection of Cordilleran Rock Suites
- This recently completed project helped to promote and preserve the Smithers Exploration Group’s (SEG) ‘Rock Room’ – a 2,000-piece collection of rock samples from key sites and mines in BC’s northwest and northcentral regions. In 2019 and 2020, SEG completed the collection with new samples from additional locations and deposits and preserved it online and in its permanent physical location in Smithers. The SEG team will be showcasing the Rock Room in the ‘Regional Groups Lounge’ at Remote Roundup.

Two Talks at the Additions to the Geoscience Toolbox session 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM
Mineralogical and Geochemical Vectors within Advanced Argillic-Altered Rocks of British Columbia
- At 2:05 PM-2:20 PM on Friday, Farhad Bouzari, Research Associate, MDRU – Mineral Deposit Research Unit, will talk about the new tools he has developed to direct mineral exploration in regions of with advanced argillic alteration.
Using Soil Gas to Identify Bedrock Mineralization and Geological Faults Beneath Glacial Deposits
- At 2:35 PM-2:50 PM on Friday, Ray Lett (British Columbia Geological Survey Emeritus), will discuss using a portable device to rapidly test gas concentrations in soil. This innovative technique can be used to identify geological faults and mineralization buried below glacial deposits in BC’s North Central and South Central Regions.
