November 28, 2006 - MapPlace.ca - Explore MapPlace and Find Exploration Targets.

Introductory: Explore MapPlace (morning).
Target audience are those who have never used MapPlace. This hands-on workshop will assume that participants have basic computer and Internet skills, but no experience with MapPlace or any GIS mapping applications. An overview of the MapPlace will be given and the range of data sets available for viewing. Participants will learn how use the basic tools of select, zoom, copy, paste, get reports etc., then learn to turn layers on and off and finally how to print, plot, save files, and linkages to the key databases for mineral tenure, mineral inventory, mineral potential and assessment reports. This 3-hour session will conclude with an overview of the topics to be covered in the next workshop on Intermediate MapPlace.
Intermediate: Find Exploration Targets with MapPlace (afternoon)
Target audience is the explorationist who is familiar with computer use and has some previous experience using MapPlace and wants to hone their research skills to identify new exploration targets before they map select their cells in MTO. This hands-on session will briefly review the basic tools of select, zoom, copy, paste, get reports etc. then learn to turn layers on and off and finally how to print, plot, save files, and linkages to the key databases for mineral tenure, mineral inventory, mineral potential and assessment reports. The session will then focus on using the geochemical, geophysical, and geology layers to generate exploration targets and strategies. Map-based analysis will be done using tools for measuring distances, creating buffers and extracting data from point/polygon intersections. The Exploration Assistant application will be used to do property and publication research. Time permitting, advanced topics will be introduced and may include use of the "Mapper Wrapper" or "MapBuilder" to annotate maps; and the "Image Analysis Toolkit" to analyze ASTER imagery and view data in Google Earth.

Exploration with ASTER Imagery on the MapPlace
This workshop will provide a brief introduction to ASTER imagery and its use in mineral exploration. There are presently 237 ASTER images on the MapPlace web-site. These multispectral images cover a large portion of the province of B.C. Online analysis of these images, integrated with other MapPlace information, can become a powerful exploration tool. This one-day workshop is being presented to assist mineral explorationists in B.C. to become more familiar with this new resource.
The workshop will examine the ASTER instruments, the characteristics of the imagery and examples of the image response to targets of exploration interest. The course will focus on using the MapPlace as a starting point for analysis, so MapPlace general characteristics and use will be briefly reviewed. Several introductory and advanced image analysis tools have been placed within the MapPlace for use with multi and hyperspectral imagery, these are collectively referred to as the Image Analysis Toolbox (IAT). The use of these tools and ASTER derivative products available through the IAT will be covered. The workshop will provide hands-on experience using the IAT, and exercises will allow participants to experiment on their own area of interest.
Strategies for the identification of mineral groups will be discussed and participants will become familiar with the capabilities of the IAT tools by examining selected images plus have the opportunity to investigate their own areas of interest.
The workshop should serve as an introduction to use of remote sensing images in mineral exploration in B.C. Information, references and discussions are meant to encourage participants to become comfortable with ASTER on the MapPlace and should provide the background to delve into other remote sensing products and more advanced software and processing techniques.
