Geoscience BC Announces Departure of President and CEO

April 25, 2013 - Geoscience BC today announced that Dr. 'Lyn Anglin, Geoscience BC's President and CEO, will be stepping down from her role this fall. After almost eight years of leadership at Geoscience BC she is moving on to pursue other interests. Under Dr. Anglin's direction, Geoscience BC has grown into a well-respected and highly effective agency for the delivery of public geoscience information focused on attracting investment to British Columbia in mineral and oil & gas exploration and development.

During her term as President and CEO, Geoscience BC launched the highly effective QUEST series of projects to collect multidisciplinary geoscience in support of mineral exploration throughout central and northwestern BC. The QUEST projects were followed by a similar initiative on Northern Vancouver Island and the newly announced TREK Project in the central interior plateau. Similarly, she established research partnerships with the oil & gas industry to assess and identify deep saline aquifers in support of innovative approaches for water use during shale gas development in northeast BC. She also facilitated the creation of numerous partnerships across BC to deliver and fund geoscience with a wide array of partners including academia, industry, the Northern Development Initiative Trust, the Island Coastal Economic Trust, several groups within the BC Provincial Government, the Geological Survey of Canada, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, and numerous community-based organizations.

The success of Geoscience BC in the last few years has been highlighted by many achievements including:

  • A dramatic increase in mineral exploration activity and related jobs in BC's interior, particularly in areas affected by the Mountain Pine Beetle,
  • New mineral discoveries at the operating Huckleberry and the old Silver Queen mines, and new greenfields discoveries such as ZNT and Silver Vista,
  • New data that supported improved management of water for the shale gas industry in northeast BC,
  • A new seismic network to monitor hydraulic fracturing in northeast BC,
  • Evaluation of several new exploration technologies and techniques applicable in BC, and
  • Technical and community engagement through the delivery of workshops on geoscience and exploration.

Geoscience BC Chairman of the Board Dr. John Thompson said "Dr. 'Lyn Anglin turned Geoscience BC into a highly effective group that has delivered wide-ranging geoscience across British Columbia. In addition to designing innovative programs that have generated high quality, sought after data, 'Lyn has managed an extremely efficient organization with minimal overhead, and developed programs based on the principals of collaboration and partnering. Technical success and resulting investment were our initial goals, but 'Lyn also demonstrated the value of engaging with communities and First Nations. We will be sorry to see 'Lyn go, but Geoscience BC has an exciting future with new programs starting this year and further initiatives in the planning stage. The next President and CEO will inherit a fine organization that provides fundamental support to two industries vital to British Columbia, and is committed to doing this through engagement with all British Columbians."

"I am a passionate believer in the value of public geoscience as a public good and I think Geoscience BC has proven itself to be one of the best public geoscience organizations in the country," said Dr Anglin. "I am honored to have had the opportunity to lead this organization, whose success has been due to the dedication and abilities of our staff and technical consultants, and the support and guidance of our volunteer Board, and Technical Advisory Committees." Dr. Anglin added that "The growth in the public understanding of, and support for, public geoscience in BC is probably one of my proudest achievements. Being able to connect with communities throughout much of BC in order to develop geoscience programs that benefit all British Columbians, has been one of the highlights of my career at Geoscience BC."

The Board of Directors has instituted an executive search process for the new President and CEO and Dr. Anglin will be working with the Board to ensure a smooth transition to the new CEO.
