Summary

HazNet-Pacific (‘Hazard Network’) is a multi-year initiative in British Columbia that addresses a suite of regional environmental hazards through the use of an ultra-high density, strategically placed sensor network. The initial project would be located in BC’s Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD) and Capital Regional District (CRD) but can be expanded nationally or beyond. In this project, hundreds of state-of-the-art micro-sensors will be installed on a 1 km node network of cellular towers and other sites around the MVRD and CRD. This network will increase prediction and early warning capabilities, e.g., earthquakes and air quality alerts, but will also measure local and regional greenhouse gas (GHG) levels, providing a sophisticated and unparalleled ability to track and model emissions.

The Need

Environmental hazards from natural and human-related activities present challenges, risks and dangers to urban situations. These hazards include GHGs, air quality pollutants, weather, noise, traffic, seismicity and pathogens. The effective prediction, assessment and monitoring of such hazards enables the capacity to reduce harm to a population and local environment. This requires comprehensive, detailed measurements, model analyses and open access communication in order to develop a reliable and cost-effective system.
