September 16, 2015 MDRU Regolith Geology and Geochemistry course
Geoscience BC is pleased to highlight the following event, which will take place September 22 & 23, 2015 at the UBC Robson Square in Vancouver, BC:
Regolith Geology and Geochemistry
Mineral Deposit Research Unit (MDRU)
September 22 & 23, 2015
UBC Robson Square, Vancouver, BC
Deeply weathered and lateritic terrains occur over wide areas of the tropics and sub-tropics, in rainfall regimes ranging from rainforest to desert, with outliers in temperate to sub-Arctic zones. They cover many highly prospective regions in South & Central America, Africa, Australia and SE Asia, and present both problems and opportunities for exploration. The course will provide an introduction to the nature and formation of the regolith and landscapes of these terrains, comparing and contrasting them across regions, including recommendations for a suitable terminology. Geochemical dispersion is discussed within the context of regolith and landscape evolution in different regions and is illustrated with numerous case histories based on research and exploration experience. These examples are biased towards gold, but case histories relating to base metals and nickel are also included. The role of weathering in the formation of secondary mineral deposits, including nickel laterites and bauxites is also discussed.
The course will be presented by Charles Butt, formerly Chief Science Officer with CSIRO Earth Sciences & Resource Engineering, Perth, Western Australia. He has considerable research experience in the development of exploration techniques in deeply weathered terrain in Australia and their applications in similar terrains in Africa and South America, and has conducted numerous professional development courses and field workshops on these subjects.
