Geoscience BC Releases Liard Basin Deep Aquifer Study at Premier's BC Natural Resource Forum

January 21, 2014 - Geoscience BC is pleased to announce the release of Geoscience BC Report 2014-02, "Subsurface Aquifer Study to Support Liard Basin Unconventional Gas and Oil Development, Northeastern B.C. (NTS 094J, K, N, O)." The release of this report highlights the beginning of the Premier's BC Natural Resource Forum in Prince George, BC, January 22-23, 2014. The report is now available for download through Geoscience BC's website at www.geosciencebc.com/s/DataReleases.asp.
About Geoscience BC Report 2014-02 Petrel Robertson Consulting Ltd. Geoscience BC Report 2014-02 is a comprehensive study of deep subsurface aquifers in the Liard Basin in support of systematic sourcing and disposal of waters used for hydraulic fracturing as part of the development of BC's vast natural gas resource. Petrel Robertson has conducted similar studies on behalf of Geoscience BC in the Horn River Basin and Montney areas. Relevant well data from both public and proprietary data sources were collected across aquifer intervals and supplemented with regional geological mapping and information from outcrop. Regional correlations were created by building a grid of regional stratigraphic cross-sections tied to core and sample cuttings data; these formed the basis for picking a stratigraphic database focused on potential aquifer intervals. Hydrogeological characterization was undertaken drawing on a well test database consisting of 256 tests from 157 well entities. Drillstem tests were used to interpret formation permeabilities and reservoir pressures. Four aquifer intervals were investigated in detail and showed that reservoir quality, based on the limited data presently available in the Liard Basin, ranges from very poor to excellent.
