Request for Water Proposals: Supplemental and Coordinated Monitoring Program

Vancouver, BC - November 8, 2019 - Geoscience BC has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for a collaborative water research project to expand groundwater, surface water and meteorological monitoring in northeastern British Columbia.

Called the Supplemental and Coordinated Monitoring Program, the project will create and test a framework for long-term, coordinated and co-located weather, surface water quality and groundwater quality and quantity monitoring sites in areas of natural gas development in northeastern BC.

This framework is intended to create a scientifically defensible methodology for the collection of coordinated data sets, with potential to expand in the future to other locations and disciplines such as cumulative impact assessment. The new project will integrate with other upcoming Geoscience BC projects which involve surface water quantity assessment, by collecting surface water quality data and installing and collecting data from groundwater monitoring wells and meteorological stations at the same locations. The locations have not yet been finalized.

The project will help to address some of the water quality and quantity knowledge gaps identified by the Scientific Review of Hydraulic Fracturing in British Columbia report, which was published by the Ministry of Energy, Mines & Petroleum Resources in March 2019. The project will fit under the Geoscience BC’s Understanding Water Strategic Objective and the associated goals:

  • Characterizing groundwater and aquifers throughout British Columbia; and
  • Measuring local and regional water balance.

The deadline for submissions is 12:00 pm Pacific Standard Time on November 25, 2019.
