Geoscience BC 2021 Picture Competition is Now Open!

Vancouver, BC – March 31, 2021 – Geoscience BC has launched its annual picture competition and is asking anyone who has worked on a Geoscience BC project to share their pictures that tell a great geoscience research story. Pictures can be submitted by principal investigators, students (including scholarship winners) and field assistants.

Pictures from the field, the lab and under the microscope are all acceptable. We kindly ask that you do not send pictures that have been previously submitted.

There will be prizes in three categories - one each for our Minerals, Energy and Water strategic focus areas. The pictures will be published in our Annual Report and Summary of Activities volumes, as well as in promotional materials, the Geoscience BC website and social media. There will be awarded up to three (3) prizes of $200 for the pictures that depict the best research stories. Images must be a minimum of 1,200 pixels on the shortest axis to be eligible (details below).

Please review the picture release form and submit with your pictures to Candice Appleby (appleby@geosciencebc.com) by Friday, October 8, 2021. Winners will be notified by email by December 17, 2021.

Image Size
Pictures must be a minimum of 1,200 pixels on the shortest axis to be eligible. This ensures they can be used at a good size in our print publications. You do not need special software to check image size. For example, on a Windows 10 device you can check the size of any image in a folder by:

  • Selecting Details in the View menu
  • Right clicking anywhere in the details row at the top of the page
  • Select More in the menu, and select Dimensions
  • You will now be able to see dimensions of all images in the folder.
If you have the same image at different sizes, we suggest that you submit the largest version that you have. If images are too large to email (Geoscience BC limit is 20 MB), we will accept submissions send through file sharing services.
